don’t・doesn’t・didn’tは
「いつの話か」と「主語」で決まります

3つとも「〜しない／〜しなかった」という一般動詞の否定文に使います。最初に、使い分けの結論だけ確認しましょう。

don’t現在 × I / you / we / they

doesn’t現在 × he / she / it

didn’t過去 × すべての主語

最重要ルール：don’t / doesn’t / didn’t の後ろは、いつでも「動詞の原形」です。

2don’t：現在形で I / you / we / they

don’t は、現在の習慣・好み・事実について「〜しません」「〜しない」と言うときに使います。

I / You / We / They + don’t + 動詞の原形

I don’t drink coffee.私はコーヒーを飲みません。

You don’t need to hurry.あなたは急ぐ必要がありません。

We don’t have class today.今日はレッスンがありません。

My parents don’t live in Fukuoka.私の両親は福岡に住んでいません。

見分け方：my parents、Tom and Lisa、these shops など、複数の人・物は they と同じグループなので don’t を使います。

3doesn’t：現在形で he / she / it

doesn’t は、現在の話で、主語が he / she / it、または I・you 以外の単数名詞のときに使います。

He / She / It + doesn’t + 動詞の原形

He doesn’t like spicy food.彼は辛い食べ物が好きではありません。

She doesn’t work on Sundays.彼女は日曜日には働きません。

My brother doesn’t drive.私の兄は運転しません。

This bus doesn’t stop here.このバスはここには止まりません。

名前でも同じ：Ken、my mother、the teacher、this computer のように1人・1つなら、he / she / it と同じ扱いで doesn’t を使います。

4didn’t：過去形では主語に関係なく同じ

didn’t は、過去に「〜しませんでした」「〜しなかった」と言うときに使います。I でも she でも they でも形は変わりません。

すべての主語 + didn’t + 動詞の原形

I didn’t sleep well last night.昨夜はよく眠れませんでした。

She didn’t come to class yesterday.彼女は昨日レッスンに来ませんでした。

We didn’t watch the movie.私たちはその映画を見ませんでした。

Ken didn’t call me.ケンは私に電話しませんでした。

時間を表す語がヒント：yesterday、last night、last week、two days ago などがあれば、didn’t を使う可能性が高いです。

5なぜ後ろの動詞は原形になるの？

doesn’t の does が「三人称単数」を、didn’t の did が「過去」をすでに表しています。そのため、後ろの動詞まで変化させる必要はありません。

She likes coffee.

否定文

She doesn’t like coffee.

does が変化を担当するので likes ではなく like。

過去形

肯定文

She went to the store.

否定文

She didn’t go to the store.

did が過去を担当するので went ではなく go。

覚え方：doesn’t / didn’t が働いたら、後ろの動詞は「元の形に戻る」と考えると簡単です。

6be動詞の否定文には don’t を使わない

don’t / doesn’t / didn’t を使うのは、like、work、go、study などの一般動詞です。am / is / are / was / were の be動詞は、その直後に not を置きます。

一般動詞：He doesn’t work today.

be動詞：He isn’t busy today.

文法を理解したら、短いフレーズをそのまま声に出して覚えるのがおすすめです。

I didn’t mean that.そういう意味で言ったのではありません。

10よくある質問

don’t と do not は何が違いますか？

意味と文法は同じです。会話では短縮形の don’t が一般的です。do not は、文章で少し改まって書くときや、「絶対に〜しない」と強く言いたいときに使われます。

doesn’t と isn’t はどう使い分けますか？

doesn’t + 一般動詞、isn’t + 名詞・形容詞・場所が基本です。He doesn’t work.（彼は働きません）／He isn’t busy.（彼は忙しくありません）のように使い分けます。

人の名前の後は don’t と doesn’t のどちらですか？

1人の名前なら he / she と同じなので doesn’t です。Ken doesn’t cook. のように言います。Ken and Lisa のように2人以上なら they と同じなので don’t です。

didn’t の後ろに過去形を置いてはいけませんか？

はい。標準的な否定文では、didn’t がすでに過去を表すため、後ろは必ず原形です。didn’t went ではなく didn’t go、didn’t saw ではなく didn’t see です。
